The recent popularity of Fornite Battle Royale has reached new levels. On his own, Twitch streamer, Ninja pulls massive audiences on Twitch at around 90,000 viewers. He is the current poster boy for the hottest video game right now. I was going to do a review on Fortnite but that ship has sailed. For those not in the know Fornite Battle Royale is a Hunger Games style “last-man-standing” video game, which is free to play on PC, Xbox and PS4. This game has truly captivated the gaming scene and I haven’t seen this level of popularity since the likes of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, GTA 5 or Minecraft. Everyone is playing this game right now, and it’s not even full release, hence why its free to play in this Early Access phase.
With that said Twitch has also been on the rise in terms of viewers and influence. Ninja has been at the top of the food chain and arguably for good reasons. He is incredibly talented at Fornite and mixes intense gameplay with entertaining commentary. But when Drake (rapping icon and fucking cool guy) jumped on stream to play duos with Ninja, it blew my mind. For me, this is like when the Harlem Globetrotters were on Scooby Doo or when Michael Jackson appeared on an episode of The Simpsons, it really is that significant. The pair also broke the current record for most viewers on a solos tream, at over 600,000 concurrent viewers. Another famous rapper Travis Scott popped by (casually) with Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster also completing the quartet.
Does this set a precedent for celebrities that also game to buddy up with Twitch streamers? Only time will tell, but what a crazy night. Certainly wasn’t a crossover I had ever imagined possible but I hope this doesn’t become some sort of PR stunt.
What does this mean for Twitch? From its pretty hardcore or underground beginnings, we could see Twitch increase in popularity and become a household name among the likes of YouTube and Netflix.
Last note, how do you top this? I have a feeling this is only the beginning of celebrities jumping on the Fortnite or Twitch bandwagon. So tomorrow we could see Ninja playing Fortnite with Beyonce, Elon Musk, and Donald Trump. What next?
